During a Meal

1. Hamotzi — Bread

  • Before eating bread we have to wash our hands and say "Al netilat yadaim" blessing.
  • Your hands have to be absolutely clean
  • Noggin water three times to every hand starting from the right hand.
  • Then we say before eating a bread:

Blessed are You, Lord, our God, King of the Universe who brings forth bread from the earth. (Amen)

Barukh atah Adonai Elohaynu melekh ha-olamha-motzi lechem min ha-aretz. (Amein)


2. Cakes, cookies, pasta — Mezonot

Before eating grain products — M'zonot

Before eating non-bread (e.g. cake) products of wheat, barley, rye, oats, or spelt (and rice, according to many opinions):

Blessed are You, LORD, our God, King of the universe, who creates varieties of nourishment.

Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu Melekh ha olam, bo're minei m'zonot.


3. Before drinking wine — Ha-Gafen

This blessing is made for wine made from grapes, but not any other fermented drink. Wine made from other fruits, and other alcohols, require the Shehakol blessing (see below).

Blessed are You, LORD, our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.

Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu Melekh ha olam, bo're p'ri ha gafen.


4. Before eating fruit — Ha-Etz

Blessed are You, LORD, our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the tree.

Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu Melekh ha olam, bo're p'ri ha etz.


5. Before eating non-fruit produce — Ha-Adama

Before eating produce that grew directly from the earth:

Blessed are you, LORD, our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the ground.

Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu Melekh ha olam, bo're p'ri ha adama.


6. Before eating other foods — She-Hakol

Before eating or drinking any foods not in the first four categories:

Blessed are you, LORD, our God, King of the universe, through whose word everything comes into being.

Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu Melekh ha olam, she hakol nih'ye bidvaro.



Grace after grain, wine and vegetables

The following blessing is said after eating cooked or baked foods prepared from the five species of grain (wheat, barley, rye, oats or spelt); after drinking wine; or after eating grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, or dates. If one partook of any combination of the above, their blessings should be combined, by adding the words in parentheses.

Blessed are You, L-rd our G-d, King of the universe, for

After food prepared from the five grains:
the sustenance and for the nourishment,

After wine or grape juice:
(and for) the vine and for the fruit of the vine,

After grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives or dates:
(and for) the tree and the fruit of the tree,

for the produce of the field, and for the precious, good, and spacious land which You have graciously given as a heritage to our ancestors, to eat of its fruit and to be satiated with its goodness. Have mercy, L-rd our G-d, on Israel Your people, on Jerusalem Your city, on Zion the abode of Your glory, on Your altar, and on Your Temple. Rebuild Jerusalem, the holy city, speedily in our days, and bring us up to it and make us rejoice in it, and we will bless You in holiness and purity.

On Shabbat:
May it please You to strengthen us on this Shabbat day.

On Rosh Chodesh:
Remember us for good on this day of Rosh Chodesh.

On Pesach:
Remember us for good on this day of the festival of Matzot.

On Shavuot:
Remember us for good on this day of the festival of Shavuot.

Blessing after other foods and drinks

Blessed are You, L-rd our G-d, King of the universe, Creator of numerous living beings and their needs, for all the things You have created with which to sustain the soul of every living being. Blessed is He who is the Life of the worlds.
